The 7 Point Plot Structure by Dan Wells

A Side Of Writing

If you don’t know who Dan Wells is then you really need to find out. He is an author, podcaster and all around interesting man. And I want to thank him for letting me write a post about his plot structure.  I first found out about him from the podcast Writing Excuses. From there I found out about his book series about John Cleaver, a teenage sociopath that has to make the decision to break all the rules that has prevented him from turning into a serial killer in order to stop a monster. And to be honest the only thing that has stopped me from already reading the book is that every time I have gone to the book store it is not in stock. While I know this is a horrible excuse, it is the truth. (Don’t worry Dan, if you are reading this, your book is…

Revise, Revise, Revise

Those three words have been my focus for the past few weeks. I’ve been spending a lot of time at Starbucks, locked up in my bedroom, or in the library. (I was at the library until it closed today!) My critique partner sent her final thoughts on every chapter a few weeks ago. I’ve been working like crazy to finish Pieces of it All and have all the confidence in the world I’ll finish it!

When I first received the file back from my crit partner, I’ll admit wanting to break down and cry as I saw all the yellow bubbles indicating notes. Crap. She didn’t like a thing and I had a lot of work ahead of me. As I hovered my mouse over the notes, there was consistency in two spots, and lucky for me, they weren’t plot line issues. In the draft seven beta readers read, many had issues with two items in the story. I ended up changing an entire plot line and adding a character. In the newest draft, the two issues were easily fixed.

A week into these revisions, I am about half way through. I’ve been on a roll, and have been finding the voice lost in one of the characters. After I complete this, I have to run the book through AutoCrit and tighten up the writing. That promises to be a job within itself.

This whole process has been fun and scary. It’s been filled with confidence and self-doubt, excitement and worry. And it’s not even over yet.

On Tuesday, April 1st, I’ll announce the release date for the e-book. The paperback will follow about a month or so after. Also, I’ll share my very first teaser image! I’m excited to jump into Teaser Tuesdays 🙂

Thank you for following me on this journey as I publish my new book. Now I must go REVISE! 🙂

Picture This: Jayne Denker is Awesome

It’s true. Jayne Denker is one of my favorite people on the interwebs 🙂 She’s sassy, clever, and writes pretty damn good books.

Jayne has a new book coming out, her fourth one and second in her small-town rom com series set in the fictional town of Marsden, NY (first was Down on Love). It comes out July 17, 2014 and you can already pre-order it. Here is some info on the book, and the coolness that is Jayne 🙂

PICTURE THIS (A Marsden Novel #2)

It’s where everyone knows your business—and remembers everything you’d rather forget. But somehow the little Catskills town of Marsden draws the most unlikely people back home, turns their lives every which way, and helps them finally figure out what—and who—they want most…

As a celebrity photographer’s assistant, Celia Marshall is used to seeing all kinds of weird antics. But subbing as the model in irrepressible movie star Niall Crenshaw’s latest endorsement ad—while wearing his silk boxers, no less—is definitely not in her job description. Neither is falling for him, especially since he’s dating his latest co-star. To complicate things further, Celia is returning to Marsden to keep an eye on her eccentric grandmother—and Niall is driving her there, then staying to judge a talent contest…

Soon Celia is pulled in a dozen different directions, trying to get her grandmother to act her age, placating her frantic former boss who’s organizing the contest—and attempting to stay away from funny, sexy Niall. Celia’s always been level headed, but suddenly she’s wishing she could get reckless right along with him. Has the time come for sensible Celia to cut loose?…

Jayne Denker divides her time between working hard to bring the funny in her romantic comedies and raising a young son who’s way too clever for his own good. She lives in a small village in western New York that is in no way, shape, or form related to the small village in her Marsden novels Down on Love and Picture This. When she’s not hard at work on another novel, the social media addict can usually be found frittering away startling amounts of time on Facebook (Jayne Denker Author) and Twitter (@JDenkerAuthor). Cover Reveal: Breaking Fences by Juliana Haygert

Today I bring you the cover reveal for Juliana Haygert’s new book. I just love the cool blue and the foggy affect. Just gorgeous! Here is the cover and a little bit about the book and Juliana.

Breaking Fences (The Breaking Series, #2)
by Juliana Haygert
Genre: NA contemporary romance
Word Count: ~80,000
Release date: June/2014
Cover by: Okay Creations

Summary from Goodreads:

All Beatriz “Bia” Fernandes wants is to prove herself—to her family and friends—though it’s hard to prove anything with an overbearing father and three famous polo-playing older brothers. After her acceptance into college results in a heated family argument, the Brazilian girl leaves everything behind to find her own American dream.

College life away from home is perfect until the people she believes to be her friends turn on her. With lies and rumors threatening to suffocate her, Bia turns to her only freedom. Riding.

But one thing gets in the way of her escape. Garrett Blackwell and his bad cowboy attitude. Working at the ranch is his obligation, bugging Bia is his newfound hobby. His thick skin and easy grin don’t hide what Bia already knows—this misunderstood and lonely cowboy fights his own demons. Brushing horses’ coats and mucking out stalls shouldn’t be this sexy, and it isn’t long before he becomes a part of her distraction.

However, escaping won’t solve her problems, and it’s up to Bia to break down the fences around her and prove her strength—not to her family and friends, but to herself … and for Garrett. Because standing on her own doesn’t have to mean standing alone.

** Companion novel of Breaking the Reins. Can be read out of order.**

Also, here are two teasers!

Today I bring you a cover reveal for Lex Martin, author of upcoming book Dearest Clementine. Cover, blurb and excerpt below, as well as a contest!

TITLE: Dearest Clementine
AUTHOR: Lex Martin
RELEASE DATE: April 18, 2014
GENRE: NA contemporary romance
MODEL: Zoe Chait

Twenty-year-old Clementine Avery doesn’t mind being called bitchy and closed off. It’s safe, and after being burned by her high school sweetheart and stalked by a professor her freshman year of college, safe sounds pretty damn good.

Her number one rule for survival? No dating. That is until she accidentally signs up for a romance writing class and needs material for her latest assignment. Sexy RA Gavin Murphy is more than happy to play the part of book boyfriend to help Clem find some inspiration, even if that means making out…in the name of research, of course.

As Gavin and Clem grow closer, they get entangled in the mystery surrounding a missing Boston University student, and Clem unwittingly becomes a possible target. Gavin tries to show Clem she can handle falling in love again, but she knows she has to be careful because her heart’s at stake…and maybe even her life.

DEAREST CLEMENTINE is a stand-alone novel with two companion novels. This New Adult contemporary romance series is recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content. Look for the second book, DEAREST DANDELION, this June.

The laundry room is dark when we walk in, so Gavin flips on the lights. A row of washers and dryers line both sides of the small room. He opens up a washer and dumps in his basket of clothes.

“Gavin, why are you washing clean laundry?” I can’t help the laugh that escapes.

He drops in a few quarters and starts the machine before he turns to me, grinning.

“I’m helping you get in the zone. Come here.” He wraps his hands around my waist, and I let out a surprised squeak when he lifts me up onto a washer. I can’t believe he just picked me up. Okay, that’s a stupid thought to have. He did carry me home two weeks ago.

His grip is firm on either side of me as he leans down to look into my eyes. I lean back slightly. He’s so far in my personal space that my shadow is crowded.

“Clementine, I want to warn you.” His voice is husky and deep. “I’m going to kiss you, and you’re going to like it. A lot. But I want to be clear that I’m not going to sleep with you because I want you to respect me in the morning.” His mouth lifts up in a wry smile. “This is simply one friend helping out another. Okay?”

Wait. Is he serious?

He must sense my apprehension because he rubs his thumb softly across my cheek. “It’s just an exercise, to get you into your story. I promise.”

I laugh, embarrassed, intrigued, and a whole lot turned on by the idea. He smiles again, but this time it’s different. His eyes darken as his hands glide over my hips. My breath catches in my chest.

“Gavin, I don’t think—“

He rests a finger over my lips.

“I’m doing this in the name of academics. You need inspiration? You’re looking at it. Now shut up and let me kiss you.”

Lex Martin writes new adult novels, the sexy kind with lotsa angst, a whole lotta kissing, and the hot happily ever afters. When she’s not writing, she lives a parallel life as an English teacher. She loves printing black and white photos, listening to music on vinyl, and getting lost in a great book. Bitten by wanderlust, this native Texan has lived all over the country but currently resides in the City of Angels with her husband and twin daughters.

Book Review: S.J. Pajonas – A Steamy Storyteller

If there’s one thing S.J. Pajonas can do, besides yoga and knit, it’s tell a love story. More impressive is she can weave a love story so romantic and sexy through an iPad screen.

Told through both Lee and Laura’s point of view, Face Time is one of the most original novels I have read about letting go of the past and moving forward. It also focuses heavily on the scrutiny interracial relationships face as Lee is Korean American and Laura is Caucasian. Both Lee and Laura have dealt with difficult pasts and exhausting families. Their loves grows fast and furious, and the heat between them is enough to set your Kindle on fire.

The growth between these two characters is tremendous and beautiful. The main characters are in their thirties, established in life, and know what they want. If you’ve been looking for an inventive romance, be sure to check out Face Time when it releases April 25th (I was lucky enough to review a copy before release!) This is the first in her Love in the Digital Age series.

If you can’t wait for April 25th, S.J. Pajonas has two other novels out which focus on Japanese culture. Check out her website for more! J

PIECES OF IT ALL: Cover Reveal

It’s hard to believe the cover reveal for Pieces of it All is already here! I’ve been anxious to show everyone the cover. I must have reviewed hundreds of stock photos before finding what I was looking for. Soft color and something a little less traditional was my goal. My awesome author friend, S.J. Pajonas, offered to design the cover for me. I love the simplicity of what she did.

Here is the cover. I hope you love it!

The book has a May 2014 release date. When I have an exact date, I’ll be sure to let you know!
